Enterprise Rent A Car Does Not Help Long Time Employees Hurt On The Clock | Gripevine
My husband was the Service Supervisor for Enterprise Rent A Car for almost 30 years. He suffered heatstroke on the property on the clock in 2009 and was unconscious for an estimated 19 minutes. He was out of work for approximately three months. When he went back to work the residual effects of the heatstroke made it hard for him to do his job. He went to his superior and told him and he said he would hire someone to help him. My husband found out through an email that was not meant to be sent to him that he had actually been demoted. The next day he had a mental breakdown. He was the first employee they hired in 1981 when they opened service in Houston. He had worked there his entire adult life. This was devastating to him. So he was on short term disability again.
After it expired Enterprise fired him stating he was a liability. He was told to his face even if he recovered he was not wanted back. This started our long, long nightmare that has not yet ended. We in the past year have lost ALL of our savings, life insurance, medical insurance, dental insurance, and prescription insurance. We tried to sue Enterprise but were told by three attorneys that we didn't have a case because he didn't die. Thank God he didn't die. We also went to Enterprise but they refused to help us. They stated that if they helped us they would have to help everyone. Then they BLOCKED us from calling them, accessing their websites, or posting about them. I opened a Twitter account because they could not stop me from that but they have blocked me from accessing their Twitter account @entrprisecares. It's a shame that they treated their 30 year employee this way. We are going to lose everything including our house because of this. We can't always get our medication and we can't always afford to pay our bills now or buy food.
Enterprise Rent A Car doesn't care. We have not been able to get help from anyone or anywhere. Also, Enterprise Rent A Car has not been that for a few years now. They are EAN Holdings, LLC because they purchased Alamo Rental Car and Nation Rental Car and it seems that not many people know that. They are able to hide behind the loopholes in the LLC. Had it not been for the LLC we would have had benefits longer as Texas Law gives you six months longer than Missouri Law does and because of the LLC they do not have to follow the law of the state we live in and he worked in; which was also unfair. Large companies should have to follow the laws of the state the employee lives in and works in. And when you are hurt on the job and almost die on the clock that company should help you. He almost literally gave his life for that company and they threw him under the bus.

It's been about 24 hours since I wrote this post. Since then I have been blocked from all of Enterprise's Facebook pages except the Used Cars page as well as Alamo's Facebook page and National's Facebook page. Apparently they do not want anyone to know how they treat their employees who are hurt and almost die on the job. This is in addition to being blocked from calling them or accessing their web sites which I have been blocked from doing for about six months now.
I received this comment this morning from the Used Cars Facebook page...it's the only site of their's that I have not been blocked from yet.
Enterprise Car Sales Hi Renee. Our company is aware of your family's situation. We are sorry for your inconvenience.
Inconvenience? It's our lives we are talking about here.
I would also like to add for those wondering; yes he was approved for Workmen's Compensation but NO Doctor he saw would take it. Every Doctor told us they didn't receive timely payments from them. Because of that we had to use our medical insurance and the Workmen's Compensation case was closed.
In addition to that he tried to file for Unemployment last week and was turned down as it's been over twelve months since he last worked. We did not try to file until the disability ended. We did the right thing and AGAIN we were turned down for assistance.
I pray everyday that no one s else has to suffer the way we do everyday for being upstanding hard working Americans who now need assistance.
Sounds like you have to cut your losses and move on - the stress of attempting to carry on a feud over something you have no control over will lead to your and your husband's early demise. Generally a company would not block access to their site(s) unless they have exhausted all avenues to help you and/or if they were receive threats/harassing behaviours. They would likely not respond to threats of a lawsuit through these media, and could retaliate with a libel/slander charge if you make unfounded allegations against the Corporation or an individual within the association.
Did the company have a health & safety policy around an employee's responsibility to follow any protocol to ensure that they do not succumb to heatstroke? If you can show that no-one enforced this with him or encouraged him to work outside without scheduled breaks for a prolonged period, (Again, as might be defined in the site policy depending on your geography) then you MIGHT have case. Otherwise I wish you peace and suggest honing your skills for some indoor work.
Hi Kanadakid:
Thank you for reading my gripe and responding to it. Enterprise has not helped us at all. We were told that my husband getting heatstroke was that same as if he had gotten Cancer by the Human Resources Manager. We were also told that if they helped us they would have to help everyone.
I have never said anything that can be considered threatening or harassing. I have never threatened them that I was going to sue them either; nor have I slandered them in anyway because believe me if I had they would have been all over me by now. We did see three attorneys and that all told us we didn't have a case because he didn't die.
I do not believe there was a healthy and safety policy for my husband to follow but I will check into it. There is probably one there now though. We were also told by the attorneys that in Texas heatstroke is not considered deadly. I don't quite understand that but okay...additionally we were told to move out of the state as Texas has the worst reputation for this type of problem.
Enterprise blocks me every single time they can when I post on any of their web sites. They employ people just to police their web sites and take down and block any derogatory comments made about their companies. Everytime I find a new web site to post on they find it within an hour and take it down and block me. The only avenues I have had to post on are this and my Facebook and my Twitter.
Also, the Enterprise handbook states that employees and their families are not allowed to post any comments about them on any web sites when you are employed by them. I take that to be a violation of my freedom of speech. I am not slandering anyone and I am not fabricating any information. I have told the truth about everything I have posted here. The company is still privately owned by the Taylor family and I have also emailed Mr. Taylor several times. The first time I emailed him my husband got a phone call asking him to tell me not to email Mr. Taylor anymore. Other than that we have not heard anything until I filed this gripe and I received the reply that said they are aware of the situation and are sorry for our inconvenience. Since that reply we have not heard anything. I think they just think that in time I will go away; and you are probably right that I should cut my losses and move on but my husband almost literally gave his life for that company and that is what fuels me.
Thank you again for your post and enjoy your day. :-)

Thanks for the update Renee - Being from the Great white North I can't imagine heatstroke as being par for the course, but to suggest you move out of state seems a bit over the top Lol! One would think that if heatstroke is a 'norm' in the deep southwest that they should have apolicy for folks to follow. When I was in the military we had a standard policy that if the temp remined at or above 32 c (that's about 95 F) - (I know, that likely doesn't sound hot to you in the sunny south, but here it causes distress as it's out of the norm for us) then the Base would stand down and personnel working out of doors could only work an hour at a time and then have to take a break, be indoors etc. Hopefully Enterprise has addressed this for other staff, so that some good comes from your husband's ordeal!
Best of Luck. Cheers.
Hi Ofelia5613,
Since we just launched, we understand that users are still learning how to best utilize and leverage our platform. We try and present customer service issues on a level playing field for both consumers and for the company in which a consumer has a complaint with.
We have faith that our members will use Gripevine in a constructive and positive manner. Our purpose is to help you arrive at successful resolutions with companies that you have legitimate complaints with.
With regards to your specific situation with Enterprise, it appears it's not exactly a customer service related issue but a "labour issue" with which our platform currently does not handle at this time. However, we have forwarded your gripe to the company on your behalf and hope that you both can come to an amicable resolution. For more information about what makes a gripe, please visit our Definition of a Gripe section: https://gripevine.com/faq.
We are planning an entire new format that will allow for personal opinions, kudos’s to companies and even simply rating a company regardless if you have a complaint or not based on your experiences with a particular company, so stay tuned for our updates.
In the meantime, we thank you for taking the time to use Gripevine's "complaint-resolution" platform. We'd love to hear about any future customer service issue that you might have and look forward to seeing how we might be able to help make that negative experience into a more positive one.
