Rogers discounts equal a contract??

I approached Rogers Communications, as a 30+ year customer, to inquire about getting a discount as a sort of loyalty bonus given that new customers were being offered all sorts of goods and services as incentives.

I was informed that I could have "limited time promotional discounts" and that these would after a year or two. I was told that cancelling my service(s) before the end of the promotion period would mean a cancellation fee would be required.

Upon cancelling my services within the promotion period I discover that Rogers will charge me $20. per month (approximately 50% of my monthly service fee) for every month remaining in the agreed upon "limited time". Rogers states that this is to cancel a "contract".

At no time did Rogers ever mention this being a contractual obligation. As I never signed anything I was unaware of the difference in our interpretation of "limited time promotion" vs contractual obligation. As well Rogers certainly did not mention the exorbitant cancellation fee.

Wow! My sentiments exactly. I too am a long term customer of Rogers going way back to when it was called Cantel. As a matter of fact, I have 3 phones on my account. I've inquired a number of times about loyalty incentives for existing customers and received the same double talk (from Rogers Customer Service) that you have. Even their equipment upgrade phones are the bottom of the line products so, we're pretty much obliged to buy-up and generally that involves some sort of "Plan" change requiring another increase in cost. Then there's the administration fees. Why should we have to pay an administration fee? We already have an account, they know who we are and it's just a matter of key strokes done by a sales associate in a Rogers Store switching equipment ID numbers.
Whenever I have to do business with Rogers it's never good. There's always extra costs and the first monthly statement after an upgrade is always a shocker.

I will admit to some blame here. I asked for a discount of some sort after seeing all of the Rogers hype and advertisements about free PVR's and such for new customers.

I foolishly thought that being a long time customer that Rogers might give me some sort of loyalty "reward". It was a big mistake. I expect that a lot of their new customers who went for the pitch ended up locked to contracts as well.

To Rogers I was just an open wallet, loyalty be damned, and nothing that Rogers does comes without a steep price.

I believe that the (granting of a discount/assumption of a contract with cancellation penalties) is not well explained and is lost in the 18 pages of fine print that Rogers throws up as terms of service whenever you try to deal with them.

I have dropped them and will not be going back.

I was told if I wanted to drop my bell contract that I would have to pay a flat fee of $300! I feel your pain. I think celluar contracts are far too onerous.
